Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Bhavya Patel and his team love caring for patients of all ages, including children! Pediatric dentistry includes treatments specifically suited to the oral health needs of children. Baby teeth and adult teeth are different, so why treat them the same way? Our pediatric dentist specializes in caring for your little one’s teeth and has the proper tools and skills to provide attentive dental care. As part of our children’s dental care, we focus on making certain that your child’s teeth stay healthy and strong for a smile that lasts a lifetime. We work hard to not only teach them the importance of brushing their teeth, but also show them they can have fun doing it!

At What Age Should I Schedule My Child’s First Dental Visit
At Birch Family Dentistry, we care for children as young as three years old; however, if your child has a problem with their teeth or gums earlier than the age of three, we encourage you to schedule an appointment for them. We suggest you bring your child to our office when they are about two years old for a visit with Dr. Johnson and one of our hygienists so they can feel more comfortable and familiar with our office.
How To Prepare Your Child For The Dentist
Preparing your child for their first dental visit may seem overwhelming. Our team has some helpful tips so you can prepare your child for their upcoming visit!
Be Positive
When telling them about their appointment, be positive and let them know everything will be okay. Remind them that nothing will hurt or bring them pain; avoiding any negative talk about dentists before their appointment. Previous stories and talk online can cause young kids to fear the dentist as they have only heard about bad stories. Remind them that everything is fine and the importance of a dental checkup for kids.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Sometimes young kids need a little positive reinforcement. Tell them that after they go to their dental appointment, they can have a donut or a sweet treat as a reward. Or maybe let them go home and watch a movie or play a special game for doing a good job in the chair. Positive reinforcement not only rewards children for their good behavior, but will also have them looking forward to their next appointment so they can seek that reward again.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth
Recover the tooth and hold it by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse, but do not over-clean or over-handle. Put and hold the tooth in place using a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If reinsertion is impossible, carry the tooth in a cup of milk or water. Stopping the bleeding is most important. Don’t remove any attached tissue, they help re-secure the tooth!
Cold, Canker Sores, and Abscesses
Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen can provide temporary relief as well. Use only as directed. An abscess is a serious infection that typically occurs in the gumline around the teeth. If left alone, infections might spread to the body. Visit your emergency provider as soon as possible if you discover pain or swelling in the gums.
What To Expect At Their First Visit
During your child’s first visit, you can expect it to be more of a meet-and-greet with your child and our dental team. A hygienist will take a look at your child’s mouth and teach them how to brush their teeth at home. Next, our pediatric dentist will come in and do a quick exam of the gums and any teeth that have developed to ensure their dental health is in check. Our team will be more than happy to answer any questions parents may have while getting your child familiar with the tools and atmosphere.

What age should my child have their first dental visit?
Children should visit the dentist by age one or within six months of their first tooth coming in. Early visits help prevent cavities, monitor development, and create positive dental habits from the start.
How often should children see the dentist?
Kids should see the dentist every six months for cleanings and exams. Regular visits help prevent decay, catch early issues, and ensure their teeth and jaws are developing properly.
What happens at my child’s first dental appointment?
At a first visit, the dentist will gently check your child’s teeth, gums, and bite, clean their teeth if needed, and review brushing and nutrition tips. Parents can ask questions and learn how to prevent cavities at home.
Are fluoride treatments safe for children?
Yes—fluoride is safe and helps prevent cavities by strengthening enamel. Dentists provide the correct amount based on your child’s age and dental needs, making it a highly effective preventive treatment.
Help prevent cavities by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, and keeping up with regular dental checkups. Sealants and fluoride treatments also provide extra protection.
For injuries like a chipped or knocked-out tooth, dental pain, or swelling, contact your dentist right away. Quick action is important for saving a tooth and relieving discomfort. Many pediatric dentists offer same-day emergency visits.
Modern digital X-rays use extremely low radiation and are safe for children. They help dentists detect cavities between teeth, evaluate growth, and monitor incoming permanent teeth.
